Jacob and Agnes came to America when Julian and Lena were babies so it must have been about 1864-1865. They first went to Philadelphia where they had cousins and Jacob thought he might get work. Ida Klaiber Babich (raised by the Pfingstags... her fathers mother was a Quatlander, sister of Grandmother Pfingstag) said it was grandmothers sister who lived there. She and her husband had a bakery near the Ohio river and made quite a lot of money when the Civil War soldiers would stop there enroute to Kentucky. Jacob helped them in the bakery for awhile. He soon decided that he should not stay as his brother-in-laws nephew (who also worked in the shop) seemed to resent him being there. Jacob went to Newport, KY., and opened a tailor shop (his old trade) in his home. This home was on 7th Street, between Central Avenue. and Patterson Street. They lived in this home until about 1905, when they moved to a new house in a newer part of town on Overton Street, near 8th Street, where grandpa (Jacob) died Feb. 10, 1907. Grandmother (Agnes) had died in 1896 of a heart condition and high blood pressure. They must have moved to Newport about 1866 as Aunt Agnes was born there March 1, 1866. Dec. 26, 1867, they had a baby girl named Ida who only lived five-and-a-half years. Emily was born April 10, 1869. She married John Meserth and lived on Central Avenue near the Pfingstags. They had three children: Agnes, Victor (who died in infancy), and Julian who died in 1968. Agnes married George Hoffman. These folks, except Agnes and George, are buried in the Pfingstag lot in Evergreen Cemetery in Newport. Agnes and George are buried at Madeira Beach, Fla. On Feb. 23, 1871, Richard Jacob was born. He married Emma Maria Mosshammer on Sept. 6, 1894 and they lived in several places in Newport. Their last home there was 715 Central Avenue where all the children were born except Vivian who was born in a different house in Newport, and Dorothy who was born in Hudson, IN. On October 5, 1875, Ida was born. She married Herbert Riedel on February 22, 1916 and went to Los Angeles, CA. to live. They had one daughter, Virginia Riedel Williams. About 1920, Agnes, Lena and Julian sold the home in Newport and went to California to live so they would be near Ida. They lived there the rest of their lives and are buried in Forrest Lawn Mausoleum, Glendale, near Los Angeles. Richard Jacob Pfingstag moved his family to Hudson, IN., May 1, 1911 and resided there until his death. He, his wife Emma and children Vivian, Carl and Stella are buried in Circle Cemetery in Hudson, IN. |
