Notes for JAMES MUNDELL:
The family story is that in the spring of 1730, James Mundell and his son, James, came from protestant Ireland to escape the religious disturbances there, to the Philadelphia, PA area. They hoped to establish a permanent home in America. James, the father, obtained work with John Garrett of some sort of clerical nature.
James, the son, was left in the care of John Garrett and the father returned to Ireland to take care of matters there and return with the rest of the family. In March, 1731, James wrote to John Garrett that he had disposed of his property and would be sailing from Londonderry in a few days on a small sailing vessel with his family and thirty other passengers. No further word was ever received and it was supposed that the vessel was lost at sea.
James, the son, may have returned to Ireland when he grew to manhood to ascertain what became of his family. His former home and the village church had been destroyed during a civil war. He could not find any former neighbors nor relatives and returned to America. Posted by Randy Leekley
